MCMOGATK
The calls to participate were like dreams, and in my sleep did i create my entries.
See if you can find them: 1996 1997
Did You-san (or is it Minowa-san?) know how exciting the possibility of participation was?
Years later, i am left wishing i had participated harder, as if that would have made a difference. I also wonder what this means: screen.
I had forgotten how much time i had put into that briefcase/city/torii. The billboards turn to face the viewer, the insides of the buildings have difference features, there's a car flying around (would have been more, and people too, but the moving buildings were already overworking my 1994-era computer), and it's a royal pain to try to navigate through. The influences are readily apparent - Blade Runner, Metropolis, etc.
And the meaning? If it ever existed, it's long since been lost in the mind of a young 21-year old.
p.s.: if you need a vrml viewer, Cortona seems to work ok in WinXP/IE.

In retrospect, i should have included a longer statement about the 1997 vrml world. Most vrml plugins are too tricky to navigate effectively, despite viewpoints and paths. Even something simple like, "approach the briefcase, wait, explore the city by navigating, going through doors, and using viewpoints, look all around the city" might have made a difference. Yes, i have remembered my intent, and i might as well write it out now since i didn't before. The businessman's briefcase contains the future world for Japan - a consistently changing city world run by ever-present commerce (the billboards), full of noisy blood (ok, 2 cars), and whose innards are run by machinated humans. Yet still around the end is a source of stability, the humanity, the religious, the only power which can again close pandora's box (clicking on the torii closes the briefcase and returns the scene to the beginning).
I am reminded of something Lida Campbell once told me, that my photography needed more direction. In that brief vrml case i created a work with direction, but forgot to mention it.
I think i just learned something.
