Warning Labels

I saw this girl walking around campus with a butterfly on her ass - not on the pocket or side of her jeans, but sewn in right in the middle of her rear. If she farts, does she cause monsoons in Southeast Asia? Maybe the butterfly was a warning label - don't scare her lest people die. Maybe her flatulence is the key to our missile defense program - surely those butterfly wings could knock down Jong-il's ICBM's during their boost phase. Whatever the effect, i made sure to keep my distance and not make any sudden moves.

Speaking of warning labels, the other day i got a bright yellow card titled HAZARD WARNING CARD in the mail. The only information on the card was my address listed in the Describe the Hazard section and an old tenant's name listed in the Recommended Precautions section. No number to call, no sign of who it's from, just a variety of cryptic form information, like PS Form 1766, April 1986 and (Case in front of mail for address or location where hazard exists. Do not deliver this form.). A number of phone calls later i find out it's from the Post Office, and it's their way of informing the post-deliverer that the listed name at the listed address has had a change of address and so no mail for that person should be delivered there. The bright yellow card and bold text is supposed to really get the deliverer's attention, and the card itself is not to be delivered, but to remain in the deliverer's satchel. Was a nice adventure, figuring that one out.

An interesting twist on "the butterfly effect". Hehe, you have an interesting perspective my friend.
That card in the mail, that's quite something. An Important Warning, but with no message. I work for a state-funded agency, and often get similar emails from the HR people. I'm sure that if I only read from The Accounting System, and only spoke to those who read The Accounting System, their messages would have some meaning. Next time maybe I should reply with a "show tech support" from a Cisco, and see if somehow we can form some kind of pidgin, so our tribes can communicate, and maybe make trade.

Hey - thanks for doing that research. I too got the same yellow card and freaked out (Been watching Jericho on CBS too much). Called the police and they thought we were nuts. I googled the form name and BAM - found your site. How did we live without the Google?

Yes, thanks for your post regarding the Hazard Warning Card. I found one in my front yard today, and with the address of my next door neighbor and the names of the people who used to live there. The card has "PS Form 1766" as an identified, and I suppose the "PS" stands for "Postal Service?"

Hey thanks for the information. My neighbor, a sweet old lady, just knocked on my door with a worried look on her face. She handed me the same yellow warning card with my address and my old roommate's name on it. Is mail forwarding really hazardous? The PS (Post Office) needs to update this card from the April 1986 version so it doesn't scare anyone else when they accidentally deliver there hazard number 15.

What a relief! I googled "yellow "Hazard Warning Card"" and your site came right up. Thank you - I was freaked out that I was about to owe the city some huge amount of money for ... something.

Would it be too hard for them to put a phone number on there? Or just not refer to a change of address as a "hazard"? Oh, well - maybe for the 2010 revision they're no doubt planning.

I also got the same card.
It was delivered to me from my neighbor, who lives 4 houses down the road, because it ended up in his mailbox. He was afraid that I had a gas leak or something.
It had my address but my son's name, which baffled me. Nothing about this property has ever been in his name. The yellow hazard notice was dated June 7, 2007 and my neighbor just got it last Friday.(It's now 9-10-07).
Which is what concerned my neighbor. That "hazard" had been here awhile!!!!!!

That it's a "warning for the mail carrier not to deliver mail in the persons name on the hazard card because of a change of address" is absurd. My son hasn't lived here for years. And why do our neighbors get it?????
Just a thought.

I know this is an old post, but I just got one of those cards, googled it, and your blog was the first thing that came up. THANK YOU for explaining this and for reassuring me that my house is not going to blow up.

I got one of those cards in my mailbox and had the same 'oh-oh' feeling that everyone else had. I appreciate this blog for confirming that I don't have to worry about something catastrophic happening. :)

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this information, I got the same card this morning and thought I should take my chances on Google to see if there was some information...and bam...the first page on Google brought me here. It does seem peculiar that mail forwarding is considered a hazard by the postal department..!

Like those before me -- THANKS for investigating the hazard warning card. Just now, a spooky looking guy dropped the yellow card in our mail box. Very quietly.. and looked around a few times and walked back to his non-descript van. Card has my friend's name -- as he had been staying at our home while we were away. I was wondering if I should be afraid for him! or of him! wheew.

Oh man, I just got one of these at my new house. I thought maybe I threw the wrong thing away in the garbage. Thanks for clearing it up for me!
